Halifax Heritage Festival – Unwrapping Wakefield Gate (magna via)
Event description
Guided heritage hike organised by Halifax Civic Trust exploring a medieval hollow way and packhorse route, still remarkably intact today.
David Glover [HCT vice-chair] will lead a fascinating Local History hike along this venerable route, from below Hipperholme all the way to Halifax. Includes illustrated handouts. We start by climbing the ancient Hollow Way, passing properties once tenancies of Shibden Hall. Skirting a site near which Christopher
Rawson’s men once intruded into the mining galleries of Anne Lister, we view the location of a lost medieval village. We note the Walker Pit Tower, and then begin the steep descent towards Halifax, so frequently used by Anne Lister on her walks into town. Crossing Beacon Hill Road we pass the site of vanished houses and hovels. From the foot of the steep hill we carry on to our destination via Woolshops.
Objective: Halifax’s oldest hostelry, in Old Market.
- Suggestion: Leave your car in Halifax, catch the bus to the stop before Hipperholme
- Essential: Tough footwear. You need to be able to cope with rough stony paths plus a very steep climb and descent!
