Ann Walker’s In-Laws – the Sutherlands, from the Highlands to Lightcliffe – and beyond. In 1828, against considerable opposition, wealthy Elizabeth Walker of Lightcliffe was married at Halifax Parish Church. Her groom was a Scotsman with little money, Captain Sutherland. What was his family background? How and why did he move into Shibden Hall? On his death in 1847, what happened to the next generation of the family? Greed and vast overspending in Scotland would lead to scandal and eventual bankruptcy, though there are some redeeming stories.
