Royal Halifax Infirmary Tour – Part of Anne Lister Festival 2025

Meet at the entrance on Free School Lane (where Casualty was) just below the crossing and where there is a post box in the wall.
Join Halifax Heritage Tours (HHT) on their special guided tour of the Royal Halifax Infirmary (RHI). Opened by the Duke and Duchess of York (later to become King George V and Queen Mary) on 25th July 1896, the building was paid for by public donations with the names of many benefactors such as Crossley, McCrea, Rawson, Appleyard, Simpson, Kitchenman, Porter and Baldwin still seen on the buildings!
What we now know as the Charity Gala was originally the Infirmary Parade, which enabled the general public to donate in buckets as the parade left town. Monies raised went to assist in the running of the RHI.
Would you like to see how the site has been developed into houses and apartments since the hospital closed in 2000? The Infirmary has always had a special place in the hearts of the people of Halifax and Calderdale; today’s residents feel the special spirit of place from this heritage and from those who have passed through the beautiful buildings over the last 127 years. The tour starts/ends at the entrance on Free School Lane (where Casualty was) just below the crossing and where there is a post box in the wall.
Please note ticket holders are not permitted to park on the Royal Halifax Infirmary site as parking is exclusively for residents. Parking is available instead on Free School Lane.
NB: Any children under 18 booked on the tour must be accompanied by an adult with a ticket for the event and will remain the responsibility of that parent or guardian at all times.
